How to Ask for Help

  • Tell someone what is happening to you. There is no reason you should feel isolated. Get support from friends and family, or hotlines and services intended for assualted women.
  • Learn about resources in your community.
  • Know your legal rights. You may need police protection or legal advice. These services may be intimidating at first, but take a someone with you for support.
  • Join a support group
  • Keep active. Stay involved in personal activities and interests. It will help reduce your isolation and restore self- confidence, self-esteem, and independence.

Safety Plans are...

designed to help keep a person as safe as possible. Before an abusive partner becomes violent, the following should be considered:
  1. Know your surroundings. Try to be around people you know.
  2. Think through all possible escape routes. If you feel an attack is about to begin, make an exit before it starts.
  3. Let someone know what is happening.
  4. Have your own transportation.
  5. Let others know your whereabouts.
  6. Know where to find help. Seek out your local domestic violence shelter.
